Entity is a data generated interactive digital mandala that can be projected on any public surface. It has featured in light-art festivals such as LUX in Wellington, White Night in Auckland, Istanbul Light Festival in Turkey and Lumina Light Festival in Portugal.
To activate the visualisation, users type an offering into Entity. The mandala then takes its form using images related to the keyword entered. The mandala utilizes code to change its shape in response to human interaction, reflecting humanity’s symbiotic relationship with automated technologies. It is a “living” digital organism, drawing visual material from the vast universe of the internet.
Entity explores the role of the ancient mandala as a spiritual teaching tool, an aid to meditation and hypnotic trance induction. Operating on the intersection of spirituality and technology, it recognises traditional understandings of the mandala as a microcosm of the universe - in this case, the digital universe.
